On School Shootings

Once again I turned on the TV news to discover that another tragic school shooting had taken place. It happens so often now in schools and churches and malls and other public places, that I’m afraid of becoming numb to it. I don’t ever want to become numb to tragedy. So what am I to think?

First, my prayers and thoughts go to all who are effected by the terrible shooting that take place. These kinds of tragedy were never intended by God. He did not cause these acts of hate-filled violence . . . man did.

When God created the world He placed mankind in the Garden in Eden. Everything was perfect. That was God's original intent - the NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS. Then mankind listened to Satan's temptation and gave in to it to disobey the one rule that they had - eating of the fruit in middle of the Garden from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Since the Tree of Life was also in the garden, God chose to expel them from the Garden lest they eat of that fruit as well and compound problems even more. It was an act of grace on His part. Because mankind made the choice to rebel, sin came into the world. The natural order of things became the UNNATURAL ORDER OF THINGS. Death and storms and chaos and evil became a reality, as well as the cause-and-effect pattern that is related to those things. God in His foreknowledge knew this would happen, so in His love and wisdom He developed a plan to offer a rescue to mankind - God coming to earth as a human to suffer and die for the very ones He created. Through this remarkable act of love He offers mankind a way back "to the Garden" some day in the future. It is called "Heaven," and it will be perfection restored - the NATURAL ORDER OF THINGS once again.

The problem that you and I face is that we live in between the bookends of the Garden and Heaven. We live within the UNNATURAL ORDER OF THINGS. That's why bad things happen to good people, and good things happen to bad people. In the midst of it all God occasionally reveals a miracle (not a supra natural event, but rather a glimpse of the natural - the way it was intended to be and someday will be). He does this to remind us of His original intent and His future plans for those who love Him and follow Him. Until that day, we just have to hang on to our hope of what is to come for all who choose to accept God's beautiful gift of grace. And we have to remain faithful even on days when we have a hard time wrapping our brains around why such tragedy occurs in the world.
